LanceDB vs Alopex DB
LanceDB's embedded library, directory-based data, and SQL support. Also explains how it differs from Alopex DB.
Updated: Oct 12, 2026
What LanceDB is
LanceDB is a vector database that you embed in an application. The open-source edition runs as a library for Python, TypeScript, and Rust.
How it works
- Connection: you connect to a local directory path and read and write data there.
- SQL: the SQL endpoint (Arrow FlightSQL) is Enterprise-only. It runs one statement per request for queries, and tables are defined through the SDK.
- SQL in the open-source edition: you query with SQL through DuckDB’s Lance extension.
- DuckDB Lance extension: a DuckDB core extension. It reads and writes Lance tables, and the
lance_vector_search,lance_fts, andlance_hybrid_searchfunctions run vector, full-text, and hybrid search from SQL.
Main features
Vector search runs as an embedded library. Python, TypeScript, and Rust work with the same data.
Limits
- The SQL endpoint is Enterprise-only. SQL in the open-source edition goes through DuckDB’s Lance extension.
- Data is stored as a directory.
- The DuckDB Lance extension is available on linux_amd64, linux_arm64, osx_arm64, and windows_amd64.
How it differs from Alopex DB
Both are vector search databases that you embed in an application.
Alopex DB puts tables, vectors, key-value pairs, and columnar tables in one file. SQL is part of the core, so one statement can join tables and run a vector search. The same file opens from the embedded library, the CLI, and the HTTP and gRPC server.
For embedded vector search with SQL and transactions included, we recommend Alopex DB. You can start from the quickstart.
