MongoDB vs Alopex DB
How mongot provides vector search in MongoDB, and what it requires. Also explains how it differs from Alopex DB.
Updated: Oct 12, 2026
What MongoDB is
MongoDB is a document database. It has vector search and full-text search.
How it works
- mongot: a separate process, mongot, based on Apache Lucene, handles vector and full-text search. mongod forwards searches to mongot over gRPC.
- Index updates: mongot keeps its indexes current through change streams.
- Atlas: MongoDB Atlas runs mongot as a managed service.
Main features
Vector search and full-text search run in the same database as your documents.
Limits
- Vector search requires running a separate mongot process and its storage.
- Indexes follow changes through change events.
- Self-managed mongot requires MongoDB Community Edition 8.3 or later and is provided for Linux distributions. The minimum versions are Server 8.3.4 and mongot 1.70.1.
How it differs from Alopex DB
Both handle data and vector search in one product.
Alopex DB updates tables and vectors in the same transaction, in one process and one file. The index is inside the core.
Alopex DB gives you JSON flexibility and SQL queries together. Try building an app with it; the quickstart is available.
