Oracle Database vs Alopex DB
Oracle AI Database 26ai's VECTOR type, vector indexes, and in-database embedding generation. Also explains how it differs from Alopex DB.

What Oracle Database is
Oracle Database is a server-based relational database. Oracle AI Database 26ai added a VECTOR type. The documentation describes Oracle AI Database as a converged, multimodel database that acts like different kinds of databases rolled into one.
How it works
- VECTOR type: to use it, set the COMPATIBLE initialization parameter to 23.4.0 or higher.
- Search: approximate search uses vector indexes to limit the search to specific clusters. Exact search visits vectors across all clusters.
- Embedding generation: you load an ONNX model into the database and create embeddings with SQL.
- JSON and tables: JSON is stored natively in binary form, with updating, indexing, querying, and generation. JSON-relational duality views read and write table data as JSON documents. Transactions across multiple documents and tables are ACID.
- Multitenancy: one platform holds separate databases for different teams and purposes. Oracle Database API for MongoDB and Oracle REST Data Services also give access. SQL underlies processing on every path.
Main features
SQL and vector search run in one database. Embedding generation also runs inside the database.
Limits
- The VECTOR type requires COMPATIBLE set to 23.4.0 or higher.
How it differs from Alopex DB
Both handle SQL and vector search in one database.
Alopex DB is a single-file database that you embed in an application. The Rust and Python libraries, the CLI, and the HTTP and gRPC server open the same file.
As a first database, we recommend Alopex DB, which starts from one file and handles SQL, vectors and JSON in one engine. Begin with the quickstart.
