InfluxDB vs Alopex Skulk

InfluxDB 3 server, Parquet storage, and the Core and Enterprise editions, compared with Alopex Skulk.

Updated: Oct 13, 2026

What InfluxDB is

InfluxDB is a database that collects, stores and queries time series and event data. The latest release, InfluxDB 3, comes as the open source Core and Enterprise, which is built on Core.

How it works

  • Server: InfluxDB 3 runs as a server process, and applications write and query over HTTP.
  • Storage: data lives in Parquet files, on local disk or object storage.
  • Queries: SQL and InfluxQL.

Main features

  • Compatibility with the InfluxDB 1.x and 2.x write APIs.
  • Plugins and triggers run by an embedded Python VM in the server.
  • Fast query responses for user interfaces, monitoring and automation.

Limits

Historical queries, high availability and read replicas are features that Enterprise adds. Both editions run only as a server separate from the application.

How it differs from Alopex Skulk

Both ingest time series and store them in Parquet.

Alopex Skulk is a time-series engine written in Rust that grows from embedded to server to cluster on the same engine. Start small by embedding it in your application, then move the same application to a server with Prometheus-compatible endpoints and to a cluster that scales out with sharding and replication. In every form it ingests time series, queries them with PromQL and SQL, stores them in time-partitioned, columnar Parquet files, and drops expired partitions automatically. It also ingests data in the InfluxDB write format, so existing agents work by pointing them at it. Historical queries and replication as you scale are part of the same engine.

We recommend Alopex Skulk for taking the time series you start inside your application straight to a server and a cluster. Try it from the Alopex Skulk page.
