Tailscale Taildrop with Alopex Chirps
Taildrop is the feature of Tailscale, the mesh VPN, that sends files between your own devices over encrypted direct connections. What if we rebuilt it by applying Alopex Chirps?

What the service does
Tailscale is a network that links your own devices with encrypted direct connections. With Taildrop, you send files from one of your devices to another, and an interrupted transfer can be resumed. The data is the list of devices and their state, and the files being sent.
How the communication is built
- Membership: each device joins the mesh as a node, connecting from a seed list. SWIM-style gossip tells which devices are alive, suspect or dead, and the list of destinations is built from it.
- Events: device join, leave and status changes arrive as events and update the list on screen.
- File transfer: files go directly to the destination device. The receiver checks the hash, applies the metadata, places the file atomically and only then reports completion. A stopped transfer resumes from its session.
The screen for choosing a destination and where received files go are the application’s code.
Deployment
Chirps is embedded in the app on each device. Each device holds its own certificate and private key, with the trusted certificates configured. Devices always authenticate each other with mutual TLS before talking.
Why Alopex Chirps fits
Sending files between your own devices comes down to two things: the list of peers and a reliable transfer. Chirps hands you both in one library, a list through gossip and file transfer that includes hash verification.
