Apache Cassandra vs Alopex DB

Apache Cassandra token ring, gossip, per-query consistency and CQL, compared with Alopex DB.

Updated: Oct 15, 2026

What Apache Cassandra is

Apache Cassandra is an open source, distributed NoSQL database. It uses a partitioned wide-column model with eventually consistent semantics. Its design combines the distribution and replication techniques of Amazon Dynamo with the data model of Google Bigtable.

How it works

  • Token ring: consistent hashing places keys on nodes around a ring.
  • Masterless replication: every node does the same job, and you choose per query how closely replicas must agree.
  • Gossip: nodes share state over gossip and detect failures.

Main features

  • Scale out by adding nodes, with no downtime.
  • CQL, a query language similar to SQL.
  • Storage Attached Indexes (SAI) and vector search.

Limits

The official docs say there is little point in running Apache Cassandra as a single node, apart from learning how it works; its strengths show across multiple machines. It runs on Java as a cluster separate from your application.

How it differs from Alopex DB

Both split data across nodes and scale by adding nodes.

Alopex DB is a SQL database written in Rust. Where Apache Cassandra assumes many machines from day one, Alopex DB starts embedded inside a single application and moves to a server and then a cluster on the same engine. In a cluster it splits data into ranges and replicates each range through Raft consensus. Data lives in SQL tables, and vector search sits in the same SQL.

Start with one machine and a SQL table in Alopex DB. The quickstart walks you through it.
