MariaDB vs Alopex DB
MariaDB Server storage engines, MariaDB Galera Cluster and MariaDB Vector, compared with Alopex DB.
Updated: Oct 15, 2026
What MariaDB is
MariaDB Server is an open source relational database built by the original developers of MySQL. It is a community-developed fork of MySQL, designed as a drop-in replacement, and is licensed under GPLv2.
How it works
- Storage engines: a wide choice of storage engines and plugins.
- MariaDB Galera Cluster: a virtually synchronous multi-primary cluster where any node can read and write.
- MariaDB Vector: a vector type and vector index that use a modified HNSW for nearest-neighbor search.
Main features
- A long history of SQL tooling and know-how.
- GIS and JSON features.
- AI-generated vectors stored and searched alongside relational data.
Limits
MariaDB Galera Cluster is Linux-only and supports only the InnoDB storage engine. MariaDB Server runs as a server separate from the application.
How it differs from Alopex DB
Both handle SQL and vector search in one database.
Alopex DB is a SQL database written in Rust that runs inside your application process. MariaDB Server starts with standing up a server; Alopex DB starts in the same process as your app and moves to a server, then to a Raft-replicated cluster, with the same SQL.
Before you stand up a server, run SQL and vector search inside your app with Alopex DB. The quickstart gets you there.
