Pinecone vs Alopex DB

Pinecone's managed architecture and how it stores and reads data. Also explains how it differs from Alopex DB.

Updated: Oct 12, 2026

What Pinecone is

Pinecone is a managed service specialized for vector search. It runs on AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure.

How it works

  • Access: every request carries an API key and goes through an API gateway. There is a global control plane and a regional data plane.
  • Storage: data lives in immutable files (slabs) on distributed object storage.
  • Writes: a write returns success after it is logged, and indexing happens in the background.
  • Paths: the write path and the read path are separate and scale independently.

Main features

Vectors are held in a hierarchy of organizations, projects, indexes, and namespaces, and searched through the API.

Limits

  • It is offered as a managed service. Every access goes over the network with an API key.
  • Slabs not in the cache (on first access or when not recently used) are fetched from object storage.

How it differs from Alopex DB

Both provide vector search.

Alopex DB updates tables and vectors in the same transaction in a local single file. It embeds in your application.

Alopex DB keeps vectors in the same file as the source data. Why not manage search and data together? The quickstart gets it running.
