Milvus vs Alopex DB
How Milvus Lite, the lightweight version of Milvus, works and its limits. Also explains how it differs from Alopex DB.
Updated: Oct 12, 2026
What Milvus is
Milvus is a database specialized for vector search. Milvus Lite is a lightweight version for local development, notebooks, tests, and small-scale AI applications.
How it works
- Milvus Lite: built in pure Python. It opens a local
.dbfile, as inMilvusClient("./demo.db"), or runs as an embedded gRPC server. - Migration: code written for Milvus Lite moves to Milvus Standalone, Milvus Distributed, or Zilliz Cloud with minimal changes.
- Production: the README says to use Milvus Standalone, Milvus Distributed, or Zilliz Cloud for large-scale production deployments.
Main features
The pymilvus API works against a local file. It also has scalar filtering and BM25 full-text search.
Limits
- One process per
data_dir. - The gRPC server supports concurrent reads, but writes to the same collection must be serialized. Concurrent writers are not supported safely.
- There is no authentication, users, roles, RBAC, or TLS.
- There are no binary, float16, bfloat16, or int8 vector fields and no Product Quantization indexes.
- The README says Milvus Lite is designed for local development and small-scale workloads.
How it differs from Alopex DB
Both can start vector search with a local file.
Alopex DB keeps the same single file and the same engine as it grows from embedded to the HTTP and gRPC server, and to a cluster through the related product Chirps. SQL handles tables and vectors together.
Embed Alopex DB in the app and HNSW vector search is running. We recommend it as an easy first step; see the quickstart.
