RocksDB vs Alopex DB
RocksDB key-value storage, column families, point lookups and range scans, compared with Alopex DB.
Updated: Oct 13, 2026
What RocksDB is
RocksDB is an embeddable persistent key-value store for fast storage. It is a C++ library that stores keys and values as arbitrarily sized byte streams.
How it works
- Sorted order: all data is kept sorted by key.
- Basic structure: writes gather in an in-memory table, are recorded in a log, and are written out to files sorted by key.
- Queries: point lookups by key and range scans.
Main features
- A database can be split into column families, with a consistent view across them.
- Atomic updates that write several keys and values together.
- Detailed configuration to tune it for fast storage and server workloads.
Limits
RocksDB is a storage engine library with a key-value interface. SQL, typed SQL tables, vector search and replication across nodes are not part of it, and the application or database on top builds them.
How it differs from Alopex DB
Both are embedded in the application and persist data on disk.
Alopex DB is a Rust database that grows from embedded to server to cluster on the same engine. It handles SQL, vector search, graphs and KV in one engine. On top of keys and values it brings SQL tables, vector indexes and transactions, and grows as is to a server and a cluster.
Try Alopex DB to layer SQL and vector search on top of the ease of a KV store. Run it from the quickstart.
