etcd-io/raft vs Alopex Chirps
etcd-io/raft's design that implements only the core Raft algorithm, compared with Alopex Chirps.

What etcd-io/raft is
etcd-io/raft is a Go library that implements only the Raft algorithm. It powers distributed systems such as etcd, Kubernetes, CockroachDB and TiDB.
How it works
- Minimal design: network and disk I/O are left to the application. The application implements the transport that carries messages between nodes and the log storage.
- Deterministic state machine: Raft is modeled as a state machine that takes messages as input, so behavior can be reproduced in tests.
Main features
- Leader election, log replication, log compaction, membership changes, leadership transfer.
- Linearizable read-only queries served by the leader and followers.
- Pipelining, flow control, and batching of messages and entries.
Limits
The application must build the transport and the log storage. It is a Go library.
How it differs from Alopex Chirps
Both are Raft building blocks embedded in the application.
etcd-io/raft focuses on the consensus core and leaves communication and storage to the application. Alopex Chirps, in Rust, also covers the outside. A QUIC transport with mutual TLS, Raft log storage on alopex-core, node discovery and membership, and snapshot transfer are all there from the start.
Try Alopex Chirps to run Raft without writing your own transport and log storage. Start from the quickstart on GitHub.
