Apache IoTDB vs Alopex Skulk

Apache IoTDB TsFile, edge-cloud sync and ConfigNode/DataNode clusters, compared with Alopex Skulk.

Updated: Oct 15, 2026

What Apache IoTDB is

Apache IoTDB is a time-series database for industrial IoT. Its lightweight, edge-cloud design covers collecting, storing, managing and analyzing IoT time series in one system.

How it works

  • TsFile: data is stored in a columnar file format designed for time series.
  • Edge and cloud: it installs on cloud platforms and on devices, with a sync tool that bridges the two.
  • Cluster: ConfigNodes for management, DataNodes for storage and compute, and AINodes for machine learning, with data split into replicated regions.

Main features

  • Queries that align timestamps across devices and measurements, plus aggregation over time.
  • A SQL-like language and JDBC.
  • Integration with Hadoop, Spark, Flink and Grafana.

Limits

Apache IoTDB needs a Java runtime. A cluster combines nodes with different roles, ConfigNodes and DataNodes.

How it differs from Alopex Skulk

Both store time series from devices and aggregate them over time.

Alopex Skulk is an embeddable time-series engine written in Rust. Apache IoTDB ships a mechanism for moving data between edge and cloud; Alopex Skulk goes straight into the device application, and the same engine becomes a server or a cluster. Queries can be written in both PromQL and SQL.
