Cloud Firestore vs Alopex DB

Cloud Firestore documents and collections, realtime sync and offline cache, compared with Alopex DB.

Updated: Oct 13, 2026

What Cloud Firestore is

Cloud Firestore is a database for mobile, web and server development from Google Cloud. It is a NoSQL, document-oriented database with no SQL tables or rows. It is used as one of the Firebase products.

How it works

  • Documents and collections: data goes into documents holding key-value pairs, and documents are organized into collections. Documents can contain nested objects and subcollections.
  • Realtime sync: realtime listeners keep data in sync across client apps.
  • Offline: a copy of the data the app is actively using is cached, and the app reads and writes that copy while the device is offline.

Main features

  • Simple and compound queries.
  • Search with vector embeddings.
  • Integration with other Firebase and Google Cloud products, including Cloud Run functions.

Limits

Cloud Firestore runs as a managed Google Cloud service. What sits on the device is a cache of the data the app is using. Queries that combine equality and inequality conditions need a composite index.

How it differs from Alopex DB

Both handle data in apps on the device and on servers.

Alopex DB is a Rust database that grows from embedded to server to cluster on the same engine. It handles SQL, vector search, graphs and KV in one engine. Embedded on the device, Alopex DB runs as the database itself, well beyond a cache. The device and the server query with the same SQL.

Try Alopex DB, which runs the same SQL on the device and on the server. Start from the quickstart.
