EMQX vs Alopex Chirps

EMQX MQTT broker, cluster architecture and licensing, and how the work splits with Alopex Chirps.

Updated: Oct 15, 2026

What EMQX is

EMQX is a large-scale, distributed MQTT messaging platform for IoT data infrastructure. It supports MQTT 5.0, 3.1.1 and 3.1, plus MQTT-SN, CoAP, LwM2M and MQTT over QUIC.

How it works

  • Broker: devices connect to EMQX as MQTT clients and exchange messages through topics.
  • Cluster: nodes share client sessions, topic subscriptions and routing information.
  • Mria and RLOG: data replicates asynchronously from core nodes, which take writes, to read-only replicant nodes.

Main features

  • Huge numbers of concurrent device connections.
  • A rule engine that transforms and routes messages.
  • Integration with backend data systems.

Limits

EMQX merged its open source and enterprise editions under the source-available Business Source License 1.1. Free production use covers a single node; clustering needs a commercial license after the trial period and is disabled without one.

How it differs from Alopex Chirps

Both move messages between nodes and can use QUIC.

EMQX is the broker at the center when many devices connect over MQTT. Alopex Chirps is a library embedded in Rust applications, for server-side nodes talking to each other directly over QUIC, with gossip membership and Raft consensus in the same library. EMQX for device connections and Alopex Chirps for the nodes behind it is a clean split.

See how little code it takes to wire up server-side nodes with Alopex Chirps on Alopex Chirps (GitHub).
