gRPC vs Alopex Chirps
gRPC calls and streaming, compared with messaging between nodes in Alopex Chirps.
Updated: Oct 13, 2026
What gRPC is
gRPC is an RPC framework where services and methods are defined with Protocol Buffers, and a method on another machine is called like a local one. It works across many languages.
How it works
- Generated from definitions: client and server code is generated from the service definition.
- Communication: on HTTP/2, it handles unary calls and server, client and bidirectional streaming.
Main features
- Authentication, deadlines, cancellation, health checking and load balancing.
- Calls across languages.
Limits
The application must know where the callee is, and gRPC is combined with name resolution and load balancing. It has no membership or consensus.
How it differs from Alopex Chirps
Both carry data between nodes.
gRPC is a framework for calling defined services. Alopex Chirps is a communication layer where cluster nodes learn about each other, with sends addressed by node ID, broadcast and subscriptions. The list of peers comes from gossip membership, and Raft consensus is in the same library.
We recommend Alopex Chirps to let cluster nodes talk to each other, with finding peers included. Try it from the quickstart on GitHub.
