hashicorp/memberlist vs Alopex Chirps
memberlist, the Go library for gossip membership and failure detection, compared with Alopex Chirps.
Updated: Oct 13, 2026
What hashicorp/memberlist is
hashicorp/memberlist is a Go library that manages cluster membership and failure detection through gossip. It is the basis of Serf and Consul.
How it works
- SWIM: it is based on the SWIM protocol, with HashiCorp’s Lifeguard improvements.
- Convergence: the README says it is eventually consistent and converges quickly on average. It contacts possibly dead nodes through multiple routes and partially tolerates network partitions.
- Joining: a node joins by naming at least one known member.
Main features
- Member listing, with join and leave events through delegates.
- Settings to tune the trade-off between propagation speed and bandwidth.
Limits
It is a Go library with no consensus. The README says configuration, with its many knobs, is the most difficult part.
How it differs from Alopex Chirps
Both are libraries for membership and failure detection through SWIM-family gossip. Alopex Chirps also tracks the three states alive, suspect and dead.
memberlist is Go and focuses on membership. Alopex Chirps is Rust and adds messaging over QUIC with mutual TLS, Raft consensus and file transfer to membership. Node IDs are persisted, so a node comes back with the same ID after a restart.
