HashiCorp Serf vs Alopex Chirps
Serf's masterless gossip membership and event broadcast, compared with Alopex Chirps.

What HashiCorp Serf is
HashiCorp Serf is a masterless tool for node discovery and failure detection through gossip. An agent runs on each node. It is also the basis of gossip in Consul.
How it works
- Gossip: a lightweight gossip protocol talks to other nodes, detects node failures and notifies the cluster.
- Events: an event system on top of gossip spreads events such as deploys and configuration changes.
Main features
- Detection of nodes joining, leaving and failing.
- Broadcast of user events.
- No master and no single point of failure.
Limits
It has no consensus, and membership is information that converges eventually. The website was shut down, and the documentation moved to the GitHub repository.
How it differs from Alopex Chirps
Both have gossip membership and notifications for nodes joining and leaving.
Serf is a tool run as an agent. Alopex Chirps is a Rust library embedded in the application. Along with membership, it has targeted messaging and Raft consensus. Nodes authenticate each other over QUIC with mutual TLS.
We recommend Alopex Chirps to handle everything from membership notifications to consensus in one library. Try it from the quickstart on GitHub.
