raft-rs vs Alopex Chirps
raft-rs from TiKV, which holds only the consensus core, compared with Alopex Chirps.
Updated: Oct 13, 2026
What raft-rs is
raft-rs is a Rust Raft library from the TiKV project, and TiKV uses it.
How it works
- Only the consensus core: the README divides Raft into four parts, the consensus module, the log, the state machine and the transport, and says raft-rs includes only the consensus module. The application builds the log, state machine and transport.
- Message format: messages are encoded with rust-protobuf or Prost.
Main features
- A consensus core that adapts flexibly to where it is embedded.
Limits
Log storage, the state machine and the transport all have to be built by the application.
How it differs from Alopex Chirps
Both are building blocks for using Raft in Rust applications.
raft-rs focuses on the consensus core. Alopex Chirps includes log storage, transport, and node discovery and membership. The application writes only the state machine, and multiple Raft groups run on the same mechanism.
